The night Robert saved poker
11 10 2007Twas Wednesday night poker and 4 were ready to play,
depressed by the showing, some blamed it on Jay
As the chips from the first hand began to disperse,
Depression set in, This game must be cursed.
At that very moment, a sound at the door,
A dark figure emerged and we were 4 no more.
Robert, Marcus, Luis T, Carlos and myself had a great night of poker thanks in part to a new system which we have named in honor of Jay.
The Yazji Poker System:
- No more late penalties
- No more strict rabbit hunt rules
- No more strict blinds (when timer is missed, we go on to the next hand)
- Chips are all worth the same, each buy-in just gets a stack to play
So how did it finish. Luis first with Marcus coming in 2nd.
Next week we will be playing again, and Monty will join in . Hopefully our new system will inspire its biggest proponent to come back.

When Berts Attack
2 08 2007Oh what a night. Poker Wednesday heated up yet again last night with the latest explosion, which is becoming an all to common trend in our humble little game. Pictured to the right in a relaxed pose, wearing none other than Bob Marley on his shirt, is the perpetrator, Berto.
Marcus, Robert, Manny, Luis T and myself all showed up to play. Special thanks to Ray (Rob’s friend) who showed up with his own 12 pack of beer then had to leave abruptly for a family emergency. We’ll save your beer for next week Ray. (maybe)
So what happen? Well its fairly simple. Bert did not realize he was big blind and folded his cards. Upon realizing he gave up .50 cents (gasp!) he promptly asked for the cards back. He was denied and pulled what we now refer to as a BakerJoe except he added a twist which has now created his own legacy in the halls of Wednesday Poker. Bert came back after his chip throwing display and pulled his ten bucks from the pot. WOW. Congratulations Bert you have created your own historic moment.
Henceforth, players at Wednesday’s game will threaten each other with pulling a “Bert” or saying that they are going to leave and take all the money they lost with them. It matters not that he had three or four dollars in chips but that he decided to take $10 (7 of which he had lost fairly to all involved).
But above all, we are men. We do not stay mad forever. We do not hold grudges. So buck up guys and don’t kill Wednesday poker.
A message for BakerJoe: In light of recent incidents, Luis T has stepped up to show a sign of friendship and has offered to buy you in for next Wednesday’s game. This is not a joke. Come back to us fallen soldier.

The Rabbit Hunt
11 05 2007This is a 2 week poker re-cap. Action packed with intrigue, suspense and even a beer catalog.
Last week, we had a meager turn out with Fred “Kirby” Monteiro showing his mug after years (yes I said years) of being on hiatus from our little game. Consorte 305, Luis, myself, Robert and Marcus were also present but the star of last week was Bakerjoe. Not because he won, although he was doing rather well when the incident happen but because his words and actions will echo in our poker lore for years to come. Yes thats right, not since I uttered the now famous phrase to Gus in a game way back when (“You don’t know how much I came to lose”) has there been such excitement. And that brings us to the explanation of what happen.I am going to try to be as objective as possible here. Basically, the Baker went on tilt. At a certain point in the game he stood up from his black plastic chair, grabbed his keys and said, “#&%@ you, #&%@ you, and #&%@ you, I’m leaving” and ran out the door.
Why. The short answer would be that he objected to the actions of Dominican Luis as dealer and rejected the notion that he would not be allowed to see the community cards after the hand had finished. Essentially, Luis denied him a look at the cards as the dealer and I agreed he should not be allowed.
The long answer I believe tells a bit more of how the scenario escalated. See the Baker started playing this game with us 3-4 years ago. Since then the game evolved into a regular weekly event with a much broader group of friends and the level of play evolved as well. By level I do not necessarily mean skill. We would probably all still get reamed at a real tournament. However, we would at least not make fools of ourselves by understanding the rules of Texas Hold’em and why the title of this post is the rabbit hunt. Of course there may be other contributing factors. I tend to get a bit angry at bad plays and I will call them out as such. I am by no means an expert however I have read a couple of books and do watch the tournaments on my DVR every once in a while. I can come down hard on people (I may be the reason the Bus no longer plays). So for that I will apologize. Not that I am going to change my ways just that you should know I mean no harm. I am only trying to improve your respective games.
I do feel that we have all become better players because of this culture and I know we will continue to improve. On to last nights debacle, sans Elmer. Almost every hand played ended with a rabbit hunt or a denied rabbit hunt. It became the new source of enjoyment as we all agreed that the dealer is the person who makes that call in our games. I myself won most my money before 4th street by betting hard. Consorte conned me out of 3 bucks with a 7-2 but later he folded to my high pair only to see his precious Ace in the rabbit hunt after the hand was over.
Rich and I made it to heads up and we decided to split the proceeds. Oh yeah, special thanks to Berto for the brew. We had quite a selection. Here are a few of our beverage options last night:
